Neighboring the Annapurna Himal, Dhaulagiri lies to the west of Kathmandu. This is a difficult trek around Dhaulagiri (8167 m) that starts from Beni on the Kali Gandaki, and the initial days are taken along the floor of the Myagdi Khola (river) passing through lush green rice paddies and past thatched farmhouses before entering into an alpine region, which adjoin the awe inspiring, and sweeping amphitheater at the base of Dhaulagiri.

From here onwards some serious high mountain trekking lies ahead which demands planning and commitment. The rewards are well worth it; the ruggedness of the terrain provides a kaleidoscope of experiences and tremendous views. French pass the highest point of the trek can be difficult and demanding, especially in bad weather conditions.

Gosaikunda lies north of Kathmandu. The Gosaikunda loop is quite remote and thinly populated area. Gosaikunda, a glacier lake, is the most famous one with several others glacier lakes adjoining it. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit the lakes during a full- moon festival in August and Hindu people believe that the god Mahadev (Shiva), intoxicated by grief due to his wife’s (Pārbati) death, felt thirsty so he hit the stone with his holy stick, thus creating the lakes. In the same place Lake Gosaikunda originates and Hindu people believe that the image of Mahadev can be seen in the middle surface of the water. The lake is also scared to Buddhists.

Annapurna Sanctuary trek is famous for trekkers. The principal peaks of the western portion of the great Annapurna Himal, including Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Fang, Annapurna, Ganagapurna, Annapurna 3 and Machhapuchhare, are arranged almost precisely in a circle about 10 miles in diameter with a deep glacier-covered amphitheater at the center. From this glacier basin, known as the Annapurna Sanctuary, the Modi Khola knifes its way south in a narrow gorge fully 12,000 ft. deep. Further south, the gorge opens up into a wide and fertile valley, the domain of the Gurungs. The middle and upper portions of Modi Khola offer some of the best short trekking routes in Nepal, and the valley is located so that these treks can be easily combined with treks into the Kali Gandaki region to the west.
